NJ is offering incentives to increase home efficiency, 20% by 2020. Since my house hasn't had any improvements I qualified for the program and was able to get 10k off systems, 1k towards insulation and also qualify for a 10 year 0% interest loan from state. Can't beat that! Now I have a new system, 93% efficiency, installed by Hutchinson. A separate company was responsible for the insulation. They blew in cellulose and sealed areas with foam.Unfortunately, the foam trapped some mice in the wall and they died. We found some in the wall of the bathroom. RIP (see the hole in the wood, foam was sprayed and they got trapped in the wall of the bathroom, bad karma)
Insulation made a huge difference. If you don't upgrade your systems make a small investment in insulation. The original water heater was probably installed when my parents were here in 1978. There was lots of sludge in the bottom of the water heater. This makes it much harder to heat the water and is very inefficient.
